This is probably a reference to a 1952 novel of the same name, written by John Steinbeck. One of the themes of the book is the hope that each individual has the freedom to overcome evil by his or her own choice. In the game, Lesley Dean chooses to deal with the fans who entered Penacony with their memories of him to keep him "alive." Could also be a reference to the 1955 American epic period drama film starring James Dean. It tells the story of a wayward young man who, while seeking his own identity, vies for the affection of his deeply religious father against his favored brother, therefore retelling the story of Cain and Abel.
