In many cultures, butterflies represent the soul. In ancient Greece, the word for butterfly is psyche, thought to be the soul of the dead. In Amphoreus, the souls of those who died of a broken heart were turned into butterflies (or Mnestia's nymphs), a gift from Thanatos to help Mnestia collect all the love and beauty in Amphoreus.
