Probably a reference to a book of the same name, written by Lawrence Block. It follows the story of Matt Scudder, a former cop, wants to finish his investigations so that he could retire and spend time with his wife. Matt's last case involves a murder whose only evidence links the killer to his wife. Matt is convinced that the real suspect is an old foe of his, someone who has terrorized and murdered his way through NYC before Matt stood in his way.
