Silent Running is an American 1972 science fiction film with environmentalist themes. In the story, all plant life on Earth is now extinct and preserved species are now cared for in spaceships, and they must find a solution to save the remaining plant life after they're ordered to destroy it. The phrase "silent running" is also a term used for submarines when they run in stealth mode in order to evade enemy discovery. The concept has also been applied to spaceships in science fiction media.
