Believed to reference "The Phantom of the Opera", a novel written by Gaston Leroux, first published as a serialization in 1909-1910. It tells the story of the mysterious, disfigured "Phantom" who lives beneath the Paris Opera House and his unrequited love for the beautiful soprano, Christine Daaé. Another possible reference is there’s a science fiction movie from 1984 called "What Waits Below"; it was originally released under the title "Secrets of the Phantom Caverns," and featured a US military team running into albino cave-dwellers during a mission.
