The Lethe serves as both a symbol and the ancient Greek term for oblivion and memory loss. It is most famously recognized as one of the five rivers in the Greek Underworld, specifically the river associated with forgetfulness. Souls of the deceased were required to drink from the Lethe to erase memories of their former lives before being reborn or reincarnated. The chive's title references part four of the 1989 sci-fi novel "Hyperion" by Dan Simmons titled, "The Scholar's Tale: The River Lethe's Taste Is Bitter." It told the story of a scholar on the pilgrimage to find the cure for his daughter, who contracted a strange disease which caused her to age backward, and lose one day of her memories each time she sleeps. Maybe the cure is to freeze her in ice just like March 7th. - Credit: Necrosyrtes
